A theme that is central to the work of Dutch photographer Danielle Kwaaitaal is the relationship between painting and photography. Her series ‘Florilegium’ draws inspiration from 17th-century botanical drawings, yet rather than true documentation, she describes the images as her own interpretation of reality. The artist photographs flowers submerged in water, which for her signifies weightlessness and the absence of time. Rather than using an external light source, the technique Kwaaitaal applies seems to translate the pulsating intensity of a television screen to her organic subjects, which themselves radiate light in a surreal way; a delusory, immersive experience of nature.
